Bolivia is the poorest country in South America. The indigenous communities living in the east of the country are among the most marginalised members of society. They find it particularly hard to exercise their civil and political rights.

We provide leadership training and support to help disadvantaged people get themselves elected into positions of influence. Bolivian president Evo Morales – the country's first indigenous president – once even attended an Oxfam leadership course.

Being prepared
Natural disasters are a common event in Bolivia. Communities can be badly affected by a variety of disasters ranging from floods to droughts, and even raging fires.
How Oxfam is helping
Oxfam is helping disaster-prone communities in the district of Beni to adapt to nature, using recently-rediscovered techniques used by local farmers who lived 3,000 years ago.
We couldn't imagine what it would be like. When we saw how it worked we saw it was very good. And because it was developed by our ancestors we felt proud because we were recovering something old. It's very nice to be involved in this.
